Green Class make a splash!

On Wednesday 4th February 2015, the children of Green Class were asked to take part in a special ‘Olympic’ event. Stratford Leisure Centre is currently undergoing a redevelopment of their swimming pool. So that children of Warwickshire can still take part in their weekly swimming lessons, the leisure centre have constructed a ‘pop-up’ swimming pool in the car park.

In partnership with ‘Everyone Active’ at Stratford Leisure Centre, the British Gas Pools 4 Schools programme has provided the temporary swimming pool. They help meet National Curriculum targets and reinvigorate swimming in the community. The programme has been running for the last 6 years and over 60,000 children have been taught to swim. The ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) found that around 46% of children in Key Stage 2 are unable to swim 25m. This programme was founded by Steve Parry (British Olympic Gold Medallist).

Because of our commitment to swimming at Stratford Leisure Centre, the children of Dunnington were invited to take part in a morning event to celebrate the success of this programme and the recent construction of the ‘pop-up’ pool. They also had the opportunity to meet and swim with: Rebecca Adlington, Steve Parry, Rachel Kelly, Rebecca Turner, Roberto Pavoni and Daniel Fogg.

The children took part in some of the following activities:

  • Talk through the P4S Journey;
  • Question and answer session to ask Team GB Athletes questions;
  • Pool sessions with the athletes that involved varied team activities, water polo tournament, relays, tri-wheel and ambassador races.

The day was a truly exciting experience that will be a memory of ours forever. To top it off, we were on BBC Midlands Today and Millie and Harry gave short interviews. We are very grateful for this amazing opportunity.
